  • To go beyond theoretical knowledge and introduce the students to the applied aspects.
  • To create awareness on the urgent need of conservation of medicinal plants and herbal wealth.
  • To instill love for nature through field trips, workshops and community development programmes.
  • To take care of primary health care needs using locally available herbs.

THRUST AREAS: Biodiversity and taxonomy, Stress physiology, Medicinal plants, Histochemistry and phytochemistry, tissue culture, Plant conservation programs, Herbal preparations for primary Health care. Students of this Department are placed in various teaching and research Institutes within Bangalore and across India and abroad.

Eligibility: Any Science Student with Biology as a subject in 12th /PUC course.

POST-GRADUATE COURSES: BOTANY STARTED IN 2010

Eligibility: A student is eligible to the admission to the M.Sc. course provided she has passed the B.Sc. examination with an aggregate of 60% minimum either with BOTANY as the principal subject or as subsidiary / interdisciplinary / applied / allied subjects.

SCOPE OF THE COURSE

The UG and PG students of Plant Science and Herbal Wealth have exposure to all branches of basic Botany. Regular field visits, Industrial visits, guest lectures and seminars are conducted. The special papers deals with some of the applied aspects like conservation, bioremediation, herbarium techniques, research methodology, a thorough study of medicinal plants with regard to pharmacognosy, phytochemistry, ethnopharmacology, ecoplanning, stress physiology and tissue culture. They form a link between Indian System of Medicine and Herbal Industry. The PG students have a special paper in Herbal Wealth every semester. The IV semester consists of a project. The project work builds in them good team spirit, leadership qualities and increases their scientific temper. They have hands on experience with latest equipments and they publish papers in peer-reviewed journals. As part of their internal assessment the students are made to give seminars and write assignments which build confidence and improve communication skills.
